Job Description

 

Position Title:   6th Grade Boys/Girls Intermural Skills Basketball Coach

 

Reports To:  Athletic Director

                   

Summary:  Will recruit students, coordinate gym space, and oversee and lead an intramural skills development training program for all interested 5th and 6th graders over a 12-week period of time for 3 hours per week.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Promote the program and recruit interested students through fliers, announcements, and conversations.
  2. Meet with High School Head Basketball Coaches to discuss and plan out needed skills/concepts to work on for the duration of the program.
  3. Create a 12-week schedule in advance after procuring gym space, and assure that all students and parents have been provided the schedule.
  4. Prepare and follow an organized practice schedule for each session, ensuring that all participating students are active and learning.
  5. Supervise students in the program at all times.  Students in the program should be accounted for while in district facilities until picked up.
  6. Communicate consistently with players, administrators, parents, and coaches about issues and ensure that any cancellations or changes to the schedule are communicated as early as possible and through multiple channels while following board policy.
  7. Create and police a set of enforceable rules governing the behavior of all students in the program and have the parents sign off.
  8. Treat all students with respect and coach them all with equal passion.
  9. During sessions, be an active participant, demonstrating concepts and working with kids.
  10. Teach athletic skills and concepts according to their level of readiness to maximize the enjoyment for all.
  11. Possibly elicit assistance from qualified individuals without allowing any parent or other volunteer who has not been screened by the district and passed background checks to assist in any way during any session.
  12. Follow all building procedures and district policies throughout the duration of the program.
  13. Make playing basketball a fun, learning atmosphere.

  

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Missouri substitute teaching certification or higher.
  • Experience working with students of all athletic levels/abilities.
  • Knowledge of basketball fundamentals/basketball coaching background.

Must possess strong, positive interpersonal skills including communication, ability to work with a wide demographic, including parents/guardians, students, varsity coaches, community members, and district personnel.

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence and memos.  Ability to write general correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in varied situations.

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, stand, walk, see and use hands and arms to handle, feel and reach.  The employee is asked to run or jog, to demonstrate athletic moves, to kneel when talking to young children, and to maintain a high level of energy.

Terms of Employment:

Contract terms covering compensation, benefits, and working conditions are specified by the Board of Education’s policies, agreements and approvals.  This position works for 3 hours minimum per week for a minimum of 12 weeks between November 1 and March 1.
